Son of Clifford and Kathy Woodard Poynter, Kelly was born in Lebanon, Missouri, on December 25, 1974. On January 18, 2002, while in the line of duty, he lost his life saving two others.
At an early age in life, Kelly was saved and united with the Second Baptist Church in Lebanon. At the time of his death, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Houston, Missouri.
On May 29, 1993, Kelly was united in marriage with Alison Bowman and to this union two sons were born, both surviving.
Kelly began working for the Laclede County Sheriff's Office before attending and graduating from the Missouri Law Enforcement Academy, 72nd Recruit Class, in 1996. He earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Mineral Area College.
He completed the Springfield Police Academy prior to his appointment with the Missouri State Highway Patrol which began on July 1, 1996. He was a trooper with Troop G in Houston, Missouri. While he was not on duty, Kelly loved to hunt and fish, was a loyal fan of NASCAR racing, and a faithful fan of #8 and #29. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Kelly is survived by his wife, Alison (Bowman) Poynter; two sons, Kaleb and Nathan Poynter, all of the home; his mother and stepfather, Kathy and Kenny Moore of Lebanon; one sister, Crissy Poynter of Lebanon; two stepsisters, Pam Middleton of Marshfield and Sally Escarcega of Phoenix, Arizona; one stepbrother, Bud Moore of Lebanon; his grandmother, Virginia Poynter of Lebanon; his grandfather, Glen Woodard of Mountain View, Arkansas; his mother and father-in-law, Dean and Hazel Bowman of Lebanon; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of fellow troopers as well as many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Poynter, who passed away in 1980; his grandmother, Dorothy Woodard, and his grandfather, Neil Poynter. Trooper Poynter is buried at Mount Rose Memorial Park.
