The Mobile Police Department confirms Officer Phillip Lang died Monday, October 14 after medical complications.
Lang graduated from the Mobile Police Academy March 14, 2013.
Before working with MPD, Lang worked with the City of Saraland. Chaplain Terry Wigley said Lang always wanted to be a police officer.
“I remember the day he told he had been hired by Mobile and he was going to go to the academy. Probably one of the happiest young men I’ve seen in my life. His dream was coming true," said Wigley.
Wigley said Lang climbed the ranks in Saraland, working in dispatch and animal control. Once Lang became a Mobile police officer, the chaplain said he confided in him a few times.
"He said, 'You’ll be in the store, or fast food place getting lunch and somebody come over to you and say thank you.' Or just appreciate him. He said that meant more him than anything he could think of," said Wigley.
Wigley encourages people to keep Lang's nine-year-old son in their prayers.
"He loved his son, he was devoted to his son. At that age he is going to miss his dad terribly,' said Wigley.
The chaplain said the law enforcement community will come together and make sure Lang’s son is not alone.
