From 1943 until 1945, he served with the army, and was with the military police in Europe. Upon his discharge, he returned to the detective bureau and remained there until he was promoted to the rank of captain in the patrol division to succeed the late Capt. John Lard in 1953.
Deal had been on the police department just one year when he and the late Patrolmen Brooks Winder arrested Joe Palmer, a notorious criminal and a partner of the infamous Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. The arrest came at a 10th Street and Garfield Avenue after Palmer had release three kidnap victims. A 50 year member of the Brotherhood Lodge No. 269, A. F. & A. M., he was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a life member of Moila Temple Shrine, a charter member of the Moila Cyclists, and a life member of the Pony Express Post No. 359 of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Hi Twelve Club, Pearl Chapter No. 529 of the Order of the Eastern Star and 40 & 8. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Benson Deal and nephew William E. Benson of the home.
