The incident began when EMPD responded to a bank and found two employees had been shot and killed. A short while later, a lawyer was also shot and killed at a nearby law firm. The suspect in both deadly shootings then barricaded himself in an apartment in Weston. Multiple agencies responded to the apartment complex and there was an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect. Detective Weiland suffered a fatal gunshot wound. The suspect was also shot and taken into custody.
Detective Weiland began his career in law enforcement 18 years ago. He had been with EMPD for the past 15 years. Governor Scott Walker ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Detective Weiland.
Detective Weiland leaves behind his wife and two children. He will be greatly missed by his department, family, and all who knew him. His dedication to law enforcement and service to his community will never be forgotten.
